There's a cafe with a red and yellow awning
On a city street where Sunday never ends
I took shelter on a wicked Winter's morning
And drank a cup while waiting for a friend

She asked me would I like to read the paper
And I thanked her as she handed me The Times
Then she busied herself with the coffee maker
As I read about the day's white collar crimes

From a Jukebox playing softly in the corner
Came a Country song about loneliness and fear
Then she closed her eyes and whispered like a mourner
In a voice that only God and her could hear.

As the music faded out into abstraction
The sound of driving rain seemed like applause
Then she watched, as if to savour my reaction
As she made her way again across the floor

As she watched the downpour dance across the rooftops
She hummed the vague suggestion of a tune
Then she fed another coin into the Jukebox
And summoned back that voice into the room

When she gathered up the things from off the table
I took the time to stop and ask her why
Then she sang with all the feeling she was able
"I'm so lonesome, I could cry"
